ISD Dune Care Planting North Kirra

Posted by dan

Well unfortunately for us, International Surfing Day didn’t quite eventuate as we planned! Waking to the kind of weather that makes you want to crawl straight back under the doona, we managed to round up a few hardy crew and head down to the site at North Kirra. On arrival the conditions made it obvious there’d be changes to the line up, so we made the call to cancel the beach cleanup, our inaugural surf with a friend comp, and (not for the first time) the famous Surfrider BBQ.

As we didn’t want to disappoint those that did graciously volunteer thier time, we pushed ahead with the launch of our new dune care project. With a local Bundjalung tribesman performing Welcome to Country, didgeridoo sounds drifted through the dunes and the plantings got going under the watchful eye of Naomi Edwards, the BeachCare coordinator from Griffith Uni’s Centre for Coastal Management, who sponsored the trees and equipment provided.

Miraculously, the rain eased and the sun was even spotted occasionally. In just a couple of hours, we added some 50 natives to the dunes, and removed a lot of weeds. We even got a spot on NBN Gold Coast News:

If you’d like to help out at our next Dune Care event, or any of our other activities, please contact us. Oh and we’ll be back for International Surfing Day next year – but we’ll order some better weather, well in advance!
