Save Hastings Point!
I’m sure many of you reading this will be residents of the Gold Coast, and if you’re also a surfer, there’s a pretty large chance you’ve stopped off once or twice over the years at Hastings Point on the Tweed Coast.
What you may not know is that Hastings, the smallest coastal village of the Tweed, is under threat from over development, and it’s something that the locals there feel very strongly about. They’ve launched a campaign website – savehastingspoint.com and are currently pursuing legal action against a large development on the southern edge of the village.
This from their website:
As the “Jewel of the Tweed” and surrounded by national park, Hastings Point village is nestled between the ocean on its east and a small, beautiful but delicate estuary on its west. It is the entrance for the now nationally recognised Green Cauldron.
Hastings Point is identified without doubt as one of the most unique of all seaside locations in Australia.
Set on a pristine estuary and an unspoiled expanse of magnificent beach, visitors come here to appreciate nature at her finest. Residents protect, clean and nurture the environment. This close-knit community act as stewards for future generations.
Put simply, there is nothing like it. For as long as one can remember, it has attracted seasonal campers who have enjoyed the natural beauty it provides. It has survived as a result of low impact development.

Pushing for a recognised Locality Plan, the campaign organisers have been working with various agencies to try and prevent unnecessary environmental damage and protect the village’s character, which is the type of action we at Surfrider fully support.
If you’d like to show your support for the campaign, why not head down to the BBQ area on the estuary at Hastings this Sunday (12th July) from 12 noon, and join in the Tweed Community Village Rally. Guest speaker will be Sylvia Hale, the Greens MLC. (I’m told there’ll be snags and snacks laid on too. Yum!)
